An open world game, set in a pocket-sized metropolis.

Founded two years ago, Ghent Theft Auto is a volunteer project that aims to bring Grand Theft Auto to Ghent, Belgium by making a total conversion of GTA:IV, also called a 'modification' or a 'mod'. The mod doesn't primarily revolve around adding specific gameplay, but rather on bringing existing gameplay to Ghent. The project is unique as far as is known. Not a lot of cities have been modeled and put inside a game engine, especially cities with populations of a mere 250,000 people.

Dream come true.

GhTA is a dream come true. Not only our dream, but yours too! We all know that vague feeling of recognition when we roam the American cities starring in the GTA franchise. Imagine that feeling when you walk the streets of Ghent. Everything you ever pulled off in Vice City, Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas and/or Liberty City will soon become a possibility in Ghent Theft Auto. It's your world, gameified.

More than violence.

Blowing up buildings, driving cars past their speed limit, carrying guns,... It isn't our (only) desire. We want to create a lifelike videogame rendition of Ghent. Not only will you be able to experience Ghent as it is today but also how it will be in the future! We're showing off the renewed Gent-Sint-Pieters railway station, the restored Nederschelde canal and the new city library 'De Krook', before they're even built.

Absolutely huge.

Ghent is a big city. When you're recreating it brick by brick, it becomes huge. The learning curve and accompanying headaches have been huge as well. That's why we're always looking for new team members. Even with very basic 3D modeling knowledge, you can help us create this one of a kind game. It's the only way you get to be 100% sure you own house is featured in Ghent Theft Auto! Contact us to get started!

Long time coming..

Ghent Theft Auto's been a long time coming. But then again, it was never supposed to grow this big when we started out. I always said I never knew where I was taking it exactly but I honestly didn't think I would take it this far. And even though I will probably never make a buck off of GhTA: the things I learned, people I met, experiences I gathered, things I accomplished, are all priceless.

.. but worth the wait.

I'm the first one to admit the project's been around for a while. When I started it, I knew next to nothing about game engines, let alone handling such an ambitious project. I had to learn the core basics of computer graphics, I had to learn making websites, I hard to learn managing a team,... Two years ago I decided to start from scratch to guarantee the precision of the map and to implement a workflow I worked on for half a year.

What's next?

This last year has been calmer, anticipating the release of GTA:V, people have lost interest in the mod. Even I don't dedicate as much time as I once did, I'm focusing more on 'flagships' like the PCC-tram, the mini-map, radio stations, top-level design for the 'Zuid'-area, etc. Regarding GTA:V, things are looking good! I fully anticipate to begin converting the mod for GTA:V within the first weeks of release. Maybe the sheer potential will get people back on the team, so we can finish this amazing project together! :)
